The San Francisco 49ers will be without two key players for their upcoming game against the Green Bay Packers on Sunday.

Quarterback Brock Purdy and defensive end have been officially ruled out due to injuries. Purdy, who has been dealing with a shoulder issue, missed practice on Friday. The 24-year-old had been limited in practices earlier in the week, participating on Wednesday and Thursday before leaving Thursday's session early due to pain in his throwing arm.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan described the situation as unexpected, stating that the shoulder pain was a "surprise" for both Purdy and the team, according to David Lombardi of The San Francisco Standard.

With Purdy sidelined, veteran quarterback Brandon Allen will step in as the starter. Allen, whose most recent NFL start was in 2021, has nine starts, including stints with the Denver Broncos and Cincinnati Bengals. Allen has not yet thrown a pass this season with San Francisco.

On the defensive side, Nick Bosa has been ruled out after missing all practices this week due to hip and oblique injuries. Bosa, the 2022 Defensive Player of the Year, currently leads the team with seven sacks this season.

Additionally, left tackle Trent Williams is listed as questionable for the game. Williams, dealing with an ankle injury, missed practice on Friday and could join the growing list of sidelined players for the 49ers.

The team has been hampered by injuries throughout the season. Running back Christian McCaffrey missed the first eight games, and wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk was lost to a season-ending in October.

San Francisco enters the game with a 5-5 record, sitting last in the NFC West but only one game behind the division-leading Arizona Cardinals (6-4). The Cardinals previously defeated the 49ers 24-23 in a closely contested matchup on October 6.
