Potential candidates such as Bayer Leverkusen boss Xabi , Germany national team coach Julian Nagelsmann, and Austria's current coach Ralf Rangnick have all declined the role.

Kompany has earned a respectable reputation during his tenures at Anderlecht and Burnley, although Burnley's relegation has somewhat tarnished his record. He speaks German, having played in the Bundesliga with Hamburg.

Despite signing a five-year contract extension with Burnley in 2023, Kompany has not commented on his future following Burnley's recent home defeat by Nottingham Forest.
